Who will be the next owner of the Buffalo Bills is one of those juicy sports stories that comes along every ten years or so and gets the local media buzzing. Much speculation is taking place in print and on-air, driven at times by national stories about perspective big names who want the Bills like Donald Trump or Jon Bon Jovi.

Two weeks ago right here at All Sports WNY I wrote that the Jacobs family would be my guess to come out on top when the dust settled on an ownership group. That scenario still makes the most sense to me considering the relationship the Jacobs already have with the Bills through their Sportservice enterprise and the experience the group has in professional sports period. Since that article the Jacobs have acknowledged that they indeed are working behind the scnes to keep the Bills in Buffalo.

I also believe another strong contender would be the Rogers family out of Toronto. Edward Rogers III could buy and sell the other Toronto group that involves Bon Jovi and they too already have a strong relationship with the Bills because of the Toronto series.

What Jim Kelly’s status currently is in the ownership picture is an unknown. As I have already written, Jim had the inside track originally because of his relationship with Ralph Wilson and had been personally assured first crack at a purchase. With Jim’s health now his number one priority, only he knows what his role is with the group that he had standing in the wings to buy the Bills.

There will be some head fakes and misleading stories generated before the real owners surface, just the nature of the beast. The Buffalo News has several very good reporters working on the story with sources of varying effectiveness hoping to reveal the next Bills owner.

There are also one or two local sources who come from the world of big business and politics who are talking off the record, touting one ownership group over another.

Yet, as of Friday April 25th it sez here that at this stage of the game I would still be looking to the Jacobs group as the front runner, by a nose, in the race for ownership of the Buffalo Bills.
