Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes has agreed to a new five-year contract worth over $45 million according to John Wawrow of the Associated Press. The Hughes agreement comes one day before the NFL free agency signing period begins on March 10th.

Jerry Hughes was originally acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts after being that team’s first round pick in 2010. Hughes blossomed in Buffalo as an edge rusher with ten sacks the past two seasons on a team that led the league in that category.

The Hughes signing is significant as new coach Rex Ryan, know for his defensive coaching prowess, has set his sights on the Bills defense being ranked number one in the league.
