The 2013 Ilio DiPaolo Scholarship winner was Drew Hull of Roy-Hart. Hull was the New York State 2013 145 lb Champion in Division II finishing the season with a 45-0 record. Hull’s career mark was 176-26 and he will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall as a member of the wrestling team. Hull carried a 94.8 grade average at Roy-Hart.
Christian Saden of Fredonia was presented the Gary Castanza Award, named for the late martial arts soke who worked numerous charity events with DiPaolo. Saden of Fredonia competed at the 220 lb. weight class, had a 6th place finish at the NYS tourney in the Div II 220 lb. class and carried a 92.8 average at Fredonia.
Jude Gardner Jr. was presented the Bill Hein Dedicated Wrestler Award, which goes to a wrestler who displays love and commitment to the sport. Gardner placed 3rd in the 145 lb. weight class at the State Championships in Div II and had a 47-4 season. He is a member of Fredonia’s 200 Win Club and 100 Pin Club.
Eric Lewandowski of Lancaster was presented the Destroyer Award, named for Hall of Fame wrestler Dick “The Destroyer” Beyer. Lewandowski Lewandowski competed at the state meet four times in his career, finishing second twice including this year at 145 pounds in Division I. He was 43-7 this year, ending 183-30 in five varsity seasons.
Anthony Liberatore of Williamsville South won the Cauliflower Alley Club Award, which recognizes fellowship within the wrestling world. Liberatore placed fifth at states at 182 and became the first wrestler at South to have 40 wins in one season. He had 88 pins among his 152 career victories.
