Bison Baseball Presents Check for Sal Maglie Mural on DeFazio Stadium Grill

June 20, 2023   ·   No Comments
Sal Maglie mural

Ron DeFazio, owner of “DeFazio’s Stadium Grill” at 1234 Hyde Park Boulevard in Niagara Falls, received a check on Monday, June 19th from the Rich Entertainment Group and Bisons Baseball committed to the completion of the Sal Maglie mural painted on the side of the establishment. In attendance was Mike Buczkowski, President of Bison Baseball, Joe Segarra President of Rich Entertainment Group, Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino, artist Alessandra Price, donor Paul Parise and Ron’s daughter Dana DeFazio. The mural was also partially funded by a Niagara Falls Corporation business grant.

Artist Alessandra Price with Ron DeFazio

The mural was completed this month by the talented Alessandra Price of Grand Island. During the check presentation Alessandra read a statement to those in attendance, in part saying,” Today, we gather here to celebrate history, art, and hometown pride. This mural holds great significance to me, as an artist who deeply values and seeks to highlight our local history. It is an honor to have had the opportunity to create this piece, inspired by the life and legacy of Sal Maglie, a pitcher born and laid to rest right here in Niagara Falls, New York. But this project carries even greater personal meaning. The location of the mural on the side of the Stadium Grill holds a special place in my heart. It was a favorite of my great uncles, and I wanted to pay tribute to the cherished memories for those here and the ones who have passed.”

Sal “The Barber” Maglie was a native of Niagara Falls, with a major league career that began in 1945 until 1959. Maglie had 119 wins, 862 strikeouts, and a 3.15 earned run average and was the only player ever to play on all three New York City teams.

DeFazio’s Stadium Grill is located across the street from Sal Maglie Stadium, dedicated forty years ago this week in honor of the most famous major league baseball player in the history of Niagara Falls.

June 13, 2023   ·   No Comments
Buffalo Bisons

June 13, 2023- The Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce that former Bisons infielder and current Hitting Coach MATT HAGUE, pitcher PETE FILSON and longtime Rich Baseball Operations President JONATHAN DANDES have been elected to the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023 will be formally inducted before and during the Bisons game against the Worcester Red Sox on Saturday, July 1 at Sahlen Field (6:05 p.m.).

The Bisons will host a special ‘Hall of Fame Induction Dinner’ featuring Hague, Filson and Dandes before their game on Saturday July 1 in the Consumer’s Pub at the Park restaurant. The dinner will include an all-you-can-eat buffet from 4-5 p.m. with Induction Ceremonies and Conversations with to follow. To make reservations (fans with tickets already) or to purchase your Buffet & Game Ticket Package, visit PubatthePark.com, Bisons.com or call (716) 846-2100.

With the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2023, the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame will now have 107 members.

The Bisons modern era career leader in both batting average (.342) and on-base percentage (.416), Hague produced one of the greatest single-season campaigns in team history, which resulted in his being named the 2015 International League Most Valuable Player. In 136 games with the Bisons in 2015, Hague won the IL Batting Title with a .338 average that was 31 points higher than any other hitter in the league. His .416 on-base percentage that season was also 30 points better than any IL hitter as Hague failed to reach base in back-to-back games just once all season long. An IL mid and postseason All-Star, Hague ranked 2nd in the IL with 92 RBI, 3rd with 33 doubles and 61 walks, 4th with a .468 slugging pct. and 5th with 70 runs scored. He hit .324 or better in each full month of the 2015 season and led the Bisons with 55 multi-hit performances over the course of the year.

Hague, who also played 13 games with the Bisons in 2014 and hit .377, had a career .342 average with 40 doubles, 12 home runs and 102 RBI in 149 total games with the Herd. In 2023, he joined the teams coaching staff as hitting coach, joining a group that includes fellow Buffalo Baseball Hall of Famer Carlos Garcia, Bobby Meacham and Joel Skinner to both play for and coach with the club.

Drafted by Pittsburgh in 2008, Hague played 43 Major League games in his career with the Pirates and Blue Jays hitting .226 with seven RBI.

Filson was the ace of the Buffalo Bisons pitching staff during the 1986 season, posting an American Association-best 2.27 ERA that still ranks as the 3rd lowest single-season mark in the Herd’s modern era. Overall, he was 14-3 in 36 appearances for Buffalo in 1986, allowing just 116 hits in 139.0 innings of work while posting the Bisons’ 7th-best winning percentage in the modern era (.824). A versatile pitcher, Filson ranked 2nd on the Herd that season in both wins (14) and saves (6). He began the year as a starter, amassing a 7-0 record in his first 10 starts that included a stretch of four consecutive winning complete games, June 7-22. On June 17 against Indianapolis, Filson allowed just one run in 10 innings to lead the Herd to victory. After transitioning to a reliever roll in early July, the southpaw allowed one or fewer runs in 23 of 24 relief appearances, throwing multiple innings 16 times.

Originally drafted by the Yankees in 1979, Filson pitched in 148 Major League games from 1982-1990 with the Twins, White Sox, Yankees and Royals and was 15-18 with a 4.18 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 391.2 innings of work.

Dandes has served as an integral part of Buffalo Bisons baseball for the last three and a half decades. He was Vice President/General Manager of Stadium Services, Inc. from 1988-1995, and was instrumental in the design, construction, and continued success of the downtown ballpark. Dandes was later appointed Executive VP of the Rich Entertainment Group in 1996 and served as President of Rich Baseball Operations from 2001-2018, overseeing not only the Bisons but also Rich’s Double-A and Single-A baseball franchises. His passion for Bisons baseball and dedicated work with locally elected leaders, Major League affiliated clubs, Minor League Baseball administrators and the team’s many great business partners helped ensure that the Bisons provided their fans with the absolute best sports and family entertainment experience year in and year out at Sahlen Field.

Among his seemingly countless WNY community endeavors, Dandes is chair of the Ralph C. Wilson Explore & More Children’s Museum and Vice Chair of the Shea’s Performing Arts Center. He has served as a Chair of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, the Buffalo Zoological Society, the Erie County Medical Center and Visit Buffalo Niagara during his distinguished career. He was also instrumental in Rich Entertainment Group’s Canalside Management team acquiring the rights to host programming in Buffalo’s Waterfront District.

Dandes remains a part of Bisons baseball today as Rich Product’s Corporate Vice President of Government Relations and Special Projects.

Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame Committee

The Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame committee is charged with the task of screening all candidates eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame and to select for induction such persons who have made a significant contribution to Buffalo professional baseball, or such Western New Yorkers who have made a meaningful contribution to professional baseball generally.

The committee is comprised of Mike Buczkowski, Tom Burns, Bob Dicesare, Mike Harrington, Kevin Lester, Duke McGuire, Bob Miske and Pete Weber.

Buffalo Bills Break Ground on “Highmark Stadium”

June 5, 2023   ·   No Comments
Highmark Stadium

Alec White

Buffalo Bills Content Coordinator

During Monday’s Groundbreaking ceremony at the construction site of the New Bills Stadium, Buffalo Bills Owner/CEO Terry Pegula announced that the franchise has finalized a new naming rights deal with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York to continue their partnership at the new stadium.

For now, the new stadium will be referred to as ‘New Highmark Stadium’ until the completion of the construction in 2026 before switching over to ‘Highmark Stadium’ — the same name of the current Bills home across the road.

The deal was announced in front of a few hundred invited guests at the Groundbreaking ceremony, including Owner/CEO Terry Pegula, EVP/Chief Operating Officer Ron Raccuia, General Manager Brandon Beane and Head Coach Sean McDermott representing the Bills, National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell as well as New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and other leaders from New York State and Erie County.

For the Bills organization, it was important to keep the continuity of the stadium name as the franchise moves venues for the first time since the 1973 season. New Highmark Stadium will continue to represent the history and meaning behind the Buffalo Bills.

“We felt like that was important to the authenticity of the franchise in the community,” said Bills EVP/COO Ron Raccuia. “Organizations & teams lose some of that value of the importance of a naming right partner when it changes a lot. So it was really important for us to have that continuity.”

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York is the region’s largest and longest-standing health plan. The organizations share 150 years of combined history in Western New York and a strong commitment to the community.

“Like the Bills, we have deep roots in Western New York, and share a vision that the “New Highmark Stadium” will serve as a center of engagement and improvement for our entire region. Highmark is excited to enter a new phase of our long-standing partnership with the Buffalo Bills and Pegula Sports and Entertainment, while reinforcing our commitment to the community,” said Dr. Michael Edbauer, President, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York.

Since the naming rights agreement began in March of 2021, the current Highmark Stadium has hosted over 850+ events outside of game days. Together, Highmark and the Buffalo Bills have welcomed thousands of Western New Yorkers to the stadium for free fitness, mental health and CPR training events.

On game days, the organizations have partnered to recognize and support over 30 community partners. Since 2021, the Bills and Highmark have distributed more than 380 tickets and $37,500 to non-profit and health care organizations, through the Highmark Community Hero program.

The joint efforts to support Western New York have also come at times when it’s been needed most. The organizations donated over $700k in direct financial relief, thousands of dollars in essential items, and hundreds of volunteer hours in the aftermath of the May 14th shooting and December Blizzard.

Buffalo’s new state-of-the-art canopy covered stadium will be the largest project ever built in Western New York, holding approximately 63,000 people.

Marvel-designed Alternate Jerseys

The Bisons and Marvel are taking their partnership to a new level in 2023 with not just one great event, but two… and with a brand new look! Marvel animators have produced a specially-designed Bisons Marvel Logo unlike any other in the team’s history, featuring a fierce and determined bison as it emerges battered but undeterred from a harsh Buffalo winter. Caps and apparel featuring the new look are already available, while the Bisons team will be wearing new Marvel Jerseys for both the Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond game on Friday, May 19 (featuring appearances by The Hulk and Black Panther) as well as for the long-awaited return of the Bisons popular Marvel’s Super Hero™ Night on Saturday, September 9 (featuring player jersey raffle and postgame fireworks).

New and Returning Ballpark Promotions

Almost every Bisons homestand in 2023 begins on a Tuesday and fans should come hungry to the ballpark when the Herd returns home. Every Tuesday this season is a TWOs-day and will feature $2 Sahlen’s Hot Dogs all game long. The Bisons have also revamped their Sunday games into the all-new Family Fundays, featuring a Pre-Game Mascot Meet n’ Greet with Buster and the WCC Racers, as well as select kid entertainment options such as face painters, balloon artists, magicians, hair braiders and more (schedule rotation to change). Of course, all Family Fundays will also include postgame Kids Run the Bases, presented by Platter’s Chocolates.

Fan-favorite events that are finally able to return to the ballpark after more than three years include the Mystery Ball on August 29, Team Photo & Autograph Day on September 3 and a visit from the ZOOperstars! on July 30. The Bisons are also home on Father’s Day (June 18) in five seasons and will feature a logo baseball giveaway and postgame Play Catch on the Field with Dad!

New Ballpark Entry Policy – No Backpacks

Please note, backpacks will no longer be allowed to be carried into Sahlen Field for Bisons fans. Fans can still use a 16” x 16” x 12” clear plastic bag to enter the ballpark and diaper bags, medical-use bags and purses will also continue to be allowed, subject to search. As a reminder, no items can be stored at the ballpark during the event. A complete ballpark carry-in policy and allowable items can be found at Bisons.com.
